I Once Was Blind, But Now I See
My life wasn’t always filled with joy. Once, I could see, and I was unhappy. Now I’m blind. And I couldn’t be happier.
My journey from being a sighted child to a legally blind adolescent to a blind adult nearly killed me, literally. Or, more accurately, I nearly killed myself because of my blindness. And I wouldn’t wish blindness on any person. But now I am sightless, yet have unlimited vision. This unlimited vision stems from the universal human spirit that we all share, yet most of us ignore. The power of this universal human spirit is what shows me how to create the life I love. And it will do the same for you.

There is nothing fundamentally special or different about me. Sure, I have my own unique package of natural talents, abilities, weaknesses, challenges and circumstances.
But so do you. That’s what makes us both beautiful and wonderful individuals.
I started to realize this gradually. As I started to look around and pay attention to why people were so inspired by me, I realized that I seemed to be doing something that other people weren’t. Something that enabled me to calmly and courageously move, act and live with conviction and without fear. I was becoming the leader of my life. I was creating a life I loved living.
But I didn’t begin to fully recognize or realize exactly how I was doing this, or the potential impact it holds for you, until May 11, 2008, the day I graduated from Cornell Law School.
On that day, Dean John DeRosa called my name, “Angela C. Winfield”. Adorned in my cap and gown and doctoral hood, I raised my Seeing Eye dog’s harness handle, took one last deep breath, rolled back my shoulders, lifted my head, commanded him “forward,” and ascended the steps to the stage. An eruption of thunderous applause carried me across the stage in a tidal wave of unbridled sound and emotion. Screaming, cheering, and clapping from every direction. I was dumbfounded, moved and, ultimately, enlightened. Even though Dean DeRosa had forewarned me days earlier that the audience would applaud, I had brushed his comment off, never expecting my classmates, their families and the faculty and staff to respond with such enthusiasm. I didn’t know most of them personally and didn’t have a clue as to why they would cheer for me.
Everything became clearer to me at the reception, as person after person after person thanked me.
That’s right, they thanked me. Sure, some folks just congratulated me and wished me luck, but the repeated sentiment was, “Thank you.”. One of my classmates thanked me because every day HE saw me in class it motivated HIM to keep coming even, though HE wanted to quit. (Secretly, there were days I wanted to quit, too. Law school is downright tough and has a way of doing that to a person. )
One classmate’s sister thanked me for just being there and walking across the stage. But the one that hit the hardest was the sentiment shared by the mother of my classmate Michael Bornhorst, a former television writer who was elected to be our student commencement speaker. Mrs. Bornhorst said, with the utmost sincerity, “I am proud of my son, but when you walked across that stage, I cried. I didn’t cry for him. You really need to find a way to share your story.”
This was not the first time I’d been urged to share my story. My husband, Lance, had consistently urged me to go out and inspire people as well. After all, he says, if it weren’t for me, he’d be dead — he would have let his blindness kill him, too.
Looking back, I realize that I was blind to the bigger picture — blind to the thing that connected me to every single person at the ceremony and beyond: them to me, me to you and you to me.
Now, I know that everyone else who thanked me that day, were so moved because they knew my success was due to the power of something we all have inside ourselves — the human spirit. They cheered not for me, Angela Winfield, or even for my spirit. They cheered for the power of the human spirit that had brought me to this place.
That was the day I realized I had been tapping into the human spirit all along and concentrating its power and strength to create and realize my vision. And you can, too.
